Outstanding Service, Beautiful Space, but the Food Didn’t Quite Justify the Price We booked a birthday dinner for two at Kato and were excited to experience one of Los Angeles’ most celebrated Michelin-starred restaurants. As fans of Asian-inspired cuisine, we were looking forward to creative flavor combinations and a memorable tasting menu. The evening started with a small scheduling mishap on my part—I had booked from a different time zone and accidentally mixed up our reservation time. Thankfully, the maître d’ was incredibly gracious and accommodated a change, which we greatly appreciated given we were driving from Orange County and battling Saturday evening traffic into Downtown LA. Kato’s location in the ROW DTLA complex is impressive, and the restaurant itself is stunning. The industrial design is warm and inviting, with personal touches from the chef and a full view of the kitchen that adds to the Michelin-star experience. The cocktail program was excellent—creative, balanced, and delicious. As for the tasting menu, the meal leaned more seafood-forward than I expected. Everything was technically well executed and beautifully presented, but surprisingly few dishes left a lasting impression. The menu felt cohesive, though many courses blended together by the end of the evening. The standout moments were: * The squab was outstanding. Meaty, well roasted. *The duck course, served with foie gras, truffle, and warm seeded bread. Spreading the foie gras onto the bread and pairing it with a bite of duck was absolutely heavenly. * The desserts, especially the Suannai, a tart Meyer lemon meringue creation accented with mint and osmanthus. As someone who loves bright, acidic desserts, this was easily my favorite dish of the night. * The service, which was impeccable throughout. The staff were friendly, attentive, and professional, keeping the meal moving at a comfortable pace while always seeming to appear exactly when we needed water, another drink, or assistance. We also opted for the Jinsha lobster supplement at an additional $55 per person. Unfortunately, this was the biggest disappointment of the evening. The portion was surprisingly small, and I struggled to detect the salted egg flavor that was supposed to define the dish. By the time drinks, taxes, and service charges were added, dinner approached $550+ per person. While that’s not unusual for a Michelin-starred tasting menu in Los Angeles, I left feeling that the overall experience didn’t quite justify the cost. I’m glad I finally had the opportunity to try Kato. The service, atmosphere, and a handful of dishes were excellent. However, considering the price point and the fact that most of the menu didn’t leave a strong impression, it’s probably not a restaurant I would return to. For those seeking polished service and a refined dining experience, it’s worth trying once—but it didn’t become a personal favorite.

Every course at Kato was amazing and delicious. I love how each dish was inspired by common Taiwanese foods, yet the chef elevated them to another level through the ingredients and flavors. The service was also fantastic. Unlike a lot of Michelin starred restaurants, Kato has a chill, welcoming vibe that doesn’t feel pretentious, while still delivering polished and attentive service.

Kato gives a very modern, minimalist vibe that I loved. I sat at the bar as a walk-in, but I’d recommend making a reservation. I ordered their shaved ice drink with yogurt base and guava, which was delicious and refreshing. I also had the toasted honey garlic bread:a pull-apart garlic bread that was absolutely amazing. Overall it feels like more of an experience than just a quick stop. The service was excellent, and the food looked incredible. That said, the tasting menu leans heavily toward seafood, so it’s definitely a great spot for non-vegetarians and seafood lovers. As a vegetarian, my options were more limited, but everything I had was fantastic.

Kato honestly exceeded expectations. The flavors were rich, balanced, and incredibly refined. The caviar added a luxurious touch without overpowering the dish, and the presentation was absolutely beautiful. Every bite felt carefully crafted and full of flavor. Easily one of the most memorable dining experiences for anyone who loves elegant food and fine details. Definitely a place I’d recommend if you enjoy elegant dining, unique flavors, and beautifully presented food.

We eat to live, but sometimes the experience is immersive art. Kato in Downtown LA is such a place. James Beard award winning Chef Jon Yao knows how to feed your soul and your senses. The minimalist decor with outstanding Taiwanese inspired courses, puts on a gastronomic show you won’t soon forget. A recent birthday dinner left me feeling pampered and satisfied with food that made you slow down and close your eyes. From the best ice cold martinis, creative cocktails, exemplary service and a tasting menu to die for, Kato is a must for that special date or celebratory occasion. Each dish on their lovely tasting menu was powerful. From the small bite starters like Yao’s yóutiao, to Tile fish, Cumin Lamb, oxtail, and the velvety, mouth- watering duck breast with crispy perilla leaf, the artistry just didn’t stop. So please go and become star-struck over each lovely bite, because there was not one disappointment or mis-step. Here’s to the meal of my dreams and I can’t wait to dine at Kato again!
